The Abominable Man, by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö

A man wakes up in his hospital bed, realising that someone's in his room. A couple of minutes later, he's on the floor in a pool of blood. It turns out he was a senior police officer who made quite a few enemies during his career, so the investigation looks like it could throw up plenty of suspects.

Steve recommended this to me, and it was a pretty good read - turns out it is the seventh of ten "Martin Beck" novels. Although I don't think I'd have realised that because while Beck is involved in the investigation, it doesn't seem like the story is particularly focused on him.

This was the book I read after Cat's Cradle, which had been a bit of a slog, so it was a relief to read something which was compelling enough for me to want to finish it in two days. Although it's now a month since I finished it, so I don't remember the details much.

But I'll try some more.
