Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction, by Sue Townsend

Takes place during the time when Saddam Hussain is asserted to have weapons that are capable of being deployed within 45 minutes; Adrian has a fairly lowly job working in a bookshop, but has been convinced to by an up-market yuppie flat and furnish it with equipment that puts him into a significant amount of debt. He doesn't enjoy the apartment as much as he feels he should; not least because the bathroom has a wall made out of glass bricks, and the wharf on the edge of the development is home to some unpleasant swans.

I don't think I've read any other Mole books but this was quite good. Gentle comedy and a fair bit of pathos, so not entirely unlike David Nobbs. I probably should read the others (I had the feeling I was missing some stuff because I didn't get all the references to other characters in his life).
