The Business of Dying, by Simon Kernick

Book about a police detective who earns extra money by doing work for shady underworld characters. At the start of the book he assassinates three men, believing them to be bad guys, but subsequently discovers that he's been set up. The rest of the book is about him trying to find out who it was he's killed, while also investigating a series of killings of teenage prostitutes.

Interesting idea I suppose, and the character has scope (is he a goodie or a baddie?). The story was OK, apart from the end which was a bit of a mess, and required the super-baddie to explain to our (anti)hero exactly how everything (assassination, serial killers) all fit together.

Reasonable holiday read.
