Another recommendation from A Good Read. Story of Noel, who's evacuated in WW2 to live with a family where the mother is poverty stricken and resorts to underhand means to get money - e.g. pretending to be a collector for war orphans. Noel is intelligent enough to help her be more effective in her endeavours.

I couldn't get on with it - it sort of was OK but I kept turning it off out of boredom and switching to something else, so after several weeks of not making any progress I gave up altogether.
