Dead Cert, by Dick Francis

Alan York is an amateur jockey, who sees a rider in front of him take an unexpected fall. After the race, with the rider critically ill, he revists the scene of the accident and finds evidence of foul play. By the time he involves the police though, the evidence has disappeared, and so Alan determines to find out what he can by himself.

I think this is the first DF book, written in 1962 and it does feel a bit dated in style, but not a bad read all the same. Don't know if I'd bother re-reading it though.
