Mothering Sunday, by Graham Swift

Recommended on "A Good Read". This is the story of a day back in the 1920's when - apparently - it was conventional that the house servants were given the day off on Mothers' Day. Jane, a housemaid, is an orphan, and instead of visiting her mother, she goes to spend the morning with her lover, who's a member of the upper classes and is engaged to be married to a proper lady.

This was a pleasant read although I wasn't completely knocked out by it.
