Mr. Paradise, by Elmore Leonard

Mr. Paradise hires Chloe to play cheerleader while he watches re-runs of his favourite ball games. One evening he asks her to bring a friend along, so she persuades her flatmate Kelly to go. Unfortunately it's this evening that Montez, Mr. Paradise's disgruntled gofer, has arranged for Mr. Paradise to be hit.

Leonard doesn't make things easy for his readers. You're just thrown in, with an array of characters and plot-lines, and it's not at all clear which ones you're meant to be paying to attention to, and how the characters are related. But it's well worth the effort. This was another winner of a book, plenty of comedy as the different characters all pursued there own agendas and tried to work out who was double-crossing who.
