The Pelican Brief, by John Grisham

Two Supreme Court judges are murdered in the same night by a professional assassin. Darby Shaw, a legal student, writes a report which speculates on what might have happened, without really believing that it might be true. The report finds its way, via her professor, to the CIA (or FBI), and who knows where else. Then people who've seen it start getting murdered, and Darby realises she's in the firing line.

Back in familiar Grisham territory, with an incompetent president being manipulated by shady power brokers who run government agencies, fearsomely efficient hit-men who never miss their targets, and a plucky individual who somehow has to outwit them all.

Some Grisham books are not worth reading at all - like The Broker and The Summons, and others are pretty good. This is one of the good ones. It's not fantastic literature, but it's entertaining and keeps your attention.
