The Pure Gold Baby, by Margaret Drabble

Can't remember the story much - it's about a girl who's got some kind of learning disability, and the mother - who's an anthropologist - making connections with her daughter and the natives of some African country where she did a field trip.

At the time I read it, I noted:

Not altogether easy to distinguish all the characters although it felt like there was a good range of them who each had a distinctive history - maybe it's that their history was hinted at rather than detailed.

Ended nicely without a "conclusion" - so we don't get to find out "what happened" to Anna in the end although earlier in the book you might gain the impression that she was going to die (that was my reading of it anyway, and seemed to be heading that way when Anna was diagnosed with cancer. The outcome of the illness wasn't told - maybe you're meant to infer she'd got better or maybe that it was terminal.
