The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx

Story about Quoyle, who loses his no-good wife in a freak accident, decides to take his two young children to Newfoundland, which is where his family comes from.

Didn't really get on with this at all. It reminds me of John Irving (Garp, Owen Meany): the lead character is socially somewhat awkward, and experiences a set of events which are almost surreal but triumphs in the end.

There were some nice descriptions in the book, I particularly remember the reference to someone who's skin looked like cottage cheese stirred by a fork, but I'm afraid the story didn't really grab me and it therefore took ages for me to read.
