Shuttlecock, by Graham Swift

Narrator, prentice, not very nice person. Talks about torturing his pet hamster when he was 10. Now 32 and is pretty cruel with his sons, making them go out into the garden and pick stones out of the flower beds until after it’s dark; he's unpleasant with his wife - positioning her for sexual intercourse.

“Shuttlecock” is the name of his fathers wartime memoir when he was the eponymous secret agent. Quite a bit of the novel is excerpts from Shuttlecock. His father now in mental asylum after suffering a breakdown and is mute and unresponsive. Prentis works in police dept that look at cold cases. He's given things to investigate which don’t really make sense by his boss who behaves a bit oddly.

A book where I wasn’t sure which bit of the story was the one I should focus my attention on I’m not sure I “got” the point except perhaps that knowledge isn’t always a good thing and there are some things it’s better tone ignorant about.

Good idea for a book though! Secret agent/peculiar police dept/strange investigation/unpleasant narrator who’s cruel to his family/...

Sort of liked it.
